The Essay: Art and Attitude

Monday, November 17, 2014
7:30 to 9:15 p.m. (networking follows the program)

Written essays have always been a creative way to express views and test the waters for larger pieces. Many have become the framework for much of social communication. Now, with the advent of the digital age, essays have taken on a new and in some ways bolder life. Not only are they published in magazines and compilations, but the essay also lives in blogs and other social media.

Essays can be literary criticism, political manifestos, technical explanations, recollections, and more.

As Aldous Huxley once said, “Like the novel, the (written) essay is a literary device for saying almost everything about almost anything.”

We will take a lively look at how it has evolved recently and what several very accomplished writers have done with the form.

A USC Cinematic Arts grad with an MFA from Antioch, she’s taught at the Writers Program at UCLA and Story Expo.

The Pam Leven Book Nook
at Sojourn Services For Battered Women And Their Children.

We lost Pam when she died from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident December 2013. We love that Pam is now honored by a spot in which women in need can be comfortable as they read and empower themselves.

This little library is room where Sojourn clients can select from donated books including many self-help and domestic violence books.

As a tribute to our longtime treasurer, Pam Leven, a supporter of battered women’s shelters, IWOSC donated $2,500 to Sojourn Services For Battered Women And Their Children. Sojourn is a domestic violence program within Santa Monica’s OPCC (Ocean Park Community Center).

Stacey Aaronson’s Become a Self-Published Author with Excellence

SEMINAR
Stacey Aaronson’s Become a Self-Published Author with Excellence

Saturday, November 22, 2014
10:30 am to 1:00 p.m.

The self-publishing model has changed a great deal over the last three years, creating a wonderful open door for writers to see their name on a published book. Unfortunately, most aspiring authors make detrimental mistakes in bringing their books to fruition and publishing them, ultimately diminishing—rather than solidifying—their credibility. Stacey Aaronson will not only share the missteps most people make when embarking on self-publishing so that you can avoid them, but she will impart the essentials you must know to become a self-published author with excellence and marketability, such as:

  • Why DIY and self-publishing are NOT one and the same
  • How to put yourself on the right marketing track from the start
  • Why you must think like a publisher, not a writer
  • Why professional editing and design are such a vital part of the self-publishing process and what questions you should ask providers
  • What kind of budget you should expect to invest in your “baby”
  • What an author platform is and how and when to start building it
  • Which self-publishing platforms she recommends and why (and which ones to avoid!)
  • and much more!

If you want to craft, produce, and market a book that will be a shining reflection of you as an author—putting you a step above the rest—this is the seminar for you!

Our Presenter:
The “Fulfiller of Publishing Dreams” and founder of The Book Doctor Is In, Stacey Aaronson is a professional book doctor who takes self-publishing authors by the hand and transforms their manuscripts into the books they’ve dreamed of—from impeccable editing and proofreading to engaging, audience-targeted cover and professional interior design—rivaling or exceeding a traditional house publication. She has been a trusted book production partner for some of the most accomplished coaches, educators, entrepreneurs, and writers of inspirational non-fiction and memoir; she also assists non-fiction writers with developing their ideas into a sound book structure with clear goals. In addition, Stacey writes a monthly newsletter for writers and is the author of the blog The Self-Publishing Scoop, where she dispenses regular guidance on all aspects of independent publishing.

Social Networking becomes both easier and more difficult all the time. As soon as you get the hang of it, the rules change. Tiffany Bradshaw’s “Branding for the Writer” Workshop

Seminar
Tiffany Bradshaw’s “Branding for the Writer” Workshop

Saturday, October 25, 2014
10:30 am to 1:00 p.m.

Brand: A unique and identifiable symbol, association, name or trademark which serves to differentiate competing products or services. Both a physical and emotional trigger to create a relationship between consumers and the product or service. A simple way to recall it is to consider a brand as a promise or an expectation.

Personal branding is the most important thing that you can do for your career.

Says Bradshaw, “I define Personal branding as marketing an individual person in a way similar to how you would market a brand name consumer product. Think of it as creating an image and “selling” it to the public through the subtle use of marketing, public relations and advertising. It is the key to success in business because with a strong brand, you can do almost anything. Think of Donald Trump or Oprah Winfrey; they move from successful project to successful project, sometimes even changing industries, almost effortlessly. A strong brand does not happen by chance; it is a concentrated effort to actively have a say in the perception the public has of them and their personal brands. Writers have very stiff competition for every opportunity, so we need to work to establish a strong brand that differentiates you from your competitors.”

This seminar will discuss Personal Branding and why it is important for writers. Tiffany will discuss Branding in terms of:

· Your Competitive Advantage
· Your Competitors
· Networking
· Your Sales Presentations
· Target Marketing
· Publicity and Media
· Marketing Materials
· Your Biography
· Your personal Intellectual Property
· Social Media

The audience is welcome to bring copies of business cards, marketing materials, screen shots of websites, etc., and if there is time, we can discuss some of them.

Alison Gee’s “The First Ten Pages”

Seminar
Alison Gee’s “The First Ten Pages”

Saturday, September 20, 2014
10:30 am to 1:00 p.m.

The first ten pages of a creative nonfiction book can make or break you as a writer. You have to establish your story, determine your tone, introduce your core characters, develop the drama and major conflict, and hint at a narrative arc and main themes.

Sound like a tall order? It is and there’s a reason for that:
When agents and editors look at your manuscript, those first 10 have to make them put down their coffee and keep turning the pages. In the marketplace, readers will skim your first 10 and either purchase your book or stick it back on the shelf. In short, your first 10 pages have to really sing. In this class, Alison Gee will talk about the elements you need for a dazzling first 10.

Our Presenter:

Alison Gee
Alison Gee

Alison Singh Gee’s memoir, “Where the Peacocks Sing” (St. Martin’s Press), was named a National Geographic Traveler Book of the Month and received starred reviews in Library Journal and Booklist.

Alison was a staff writer for People magazine and has also written for such publications as Vanity Fair, In Style, International Herald Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times. In 1997, she won an Amnesty International Award for Human Rights Feature Writing.

She teaches Creative Nonfiction at UCLA Extension (https://www.uclaextension.edu/pages/InstructorBio.aspx?instid=27936), and is presently working on a memoir sequel, “Cooking for the Maharani: Four Continents, Six Iconic Chefs and One Tall Glass of Revenge.”
